Latest analysis and events for IT —

As of 2026-08-09, orbyd's latest analysis for Gartner, Inc. (IT): Post-derate re-rating accelerating after the 2026-08-04 Q2 print: adj EPS $4.37 vs $3.75 est, contract-value growth up 70bps sequentially, FY26 EPS guide raised to ≥$14.00, +$500M buyback added 2026-07-30 — but shares gapped 23.7% in one session and now sit above four of five recent sell-side targets with no company catalyst for ~three months.

Invalidation trigger: A weekly close below $168 marks the 2026-08-04 earnings gap as failed with no company data in the interval; secondarily, total contract-value growth at the ~2026-11-03 Q3 print falling back below the +1.7% YoY posted at 2026-06-30.

Current Thesis

What an investor is buying here is a de-rating reversal in a franchise the market had written down as AI roadkill. The Q2 2026 print on 2026-08-04 attacked both. Contract value reached $5.28B at 2026-06-30, +1.7% YoY, with ex-federal CV +3.3% and total CV growth improving 70bps versus Q1 2026 — the first sequential improvement after the federal drag. Adjusted EPS was $4.37 against a $3.75 consensus, +24% YoY, on adjusted operating margin of 25% (up ~560bps YoY per StockStory's 2026-08-04 write-up). Shares rose 23.7% that session.

The leg is therefore EPS and free-cash-flow compounding at roughly 2% top-line growth, funded by margin and share count, with contract value merely required to stop getting worse. That is a narrower claim than "Gartner is growing again," and the difference matters: management raised adjusted EPS to ≥$14.00 (from ≥$13.25), adjusted EBITDA to ≥$1.57B and FCF to ≥$1.19B, while cutting FY26 revenue guidance to ≥$6.38B from ≥$6.41B — below the $6.431B consensus.

Bullish and bearish views on Gartner, Inc.

The model's bull view on Gartner, Inc. (IT), in brief: Q2 2026 (reported 2026-08-04): adjusted EPS $4.37 vs $3.75 estimate; revenue $1.676B vs $1.650B estimate, +3% YoY. The bear view: The revenue guide went down. FY26 revenue ≥$6.38B, trimmed from ≥$6.41B and below the $6.431B consensus. The EPS raise came from margin and share count; demand did not improve. +1.7% CV growth is close to flat in real terms. A $5.28B subscription book compounding at 1–3%… Both cases follow in full.

Bull Case

  • Q2 2026 (reported 2026-08-04): adjusted EPS $4.37 vs $3.75 estimate; revenue $1.676B vs $1.650B estimate, +3% YoY. Adjusted EBITDA $466M, +6.4% YoY, 27.8% margin.
  • Contract value inflected: $5.28B at 2026-06-30, +1.7% YoY reported; ex-federal +3.3%; total CV growth up 70bps sequentially from Q1 2026. GTS CV +1% YoY, GBS CV +3% YoY, both driven by new-client business per the Q2 call.
  • Guidance raised on three of four lines (2026-08-04): adjusted EPS ≥$14.00 from ≥$13.25; adjusted EBITDA ≥$1.57B from ≥$1.55B; FCF ≥$1.19B from ≥$1.16B. GAAP EPS guided above $13.14 against a $12.86 estimate.
  • Capital return is the mechanism, and it is running: 3.6M shares retired for $547M in Q2 2026, $1.2B authorization remaining, and the board added an incremental $500M on 2026-07-30. Balance sheet at 2026-06-30: $1.49B cash, $3.0B debt, 0.9x net leverage.
  • Conferences $244M, +15.5% YoY (+14.2% FX-neutral), contribution margin 59.5%, up 210bps. Inferred read: in-person peer benchmarking is retaining pricing power while document-based research growth stalls — a distinction the AI-substitution bear case does not account for.
  • Product density improving: management cited an insights library up 18% YoY with higher-impact documents up double digits on the Q2 call.

Bear Case

  • The revenue guide went down. FY26 revenue ≥$6.38B, trimmed from ≥$6.41B and below the $6.431B consensus. The EPS raise came from margin and share count; demand did not improve.
  • +1.7% CV growth is close to flat in real terms. A $5.28B subscription book compounding at 1–3% supports an EPS story only while cost-out and buyback last, and neither repeats at the Q2 rate indefinitely.
  • Consulting is contracting: $142M in Q2 2026, -8.8% YoY, contribution down 12.6% and contribution margin off 170bps.
  • One quarter does not resolve AI substitution. Nothing in the Q2 disclosure measures renewal behaviour among enterprises that have deployed internal LLMs against the same questions Gartner's research answers. The next dated read is the Q3 print.
  • Price sits above most published targets. Of the five most recent sell-side actions — Morgan Stanley Equal-Weight $173 (2026-07-10), and on 2026-08-05 RBC Sector Perform $164, Wells Fargo Underweight $150, Goldman Neutral $181, UBS Neutral $196 — the 2026-08-07 close of $185.6 exceeds four. None of the five is a Buy rating. Every one of those firms raised its number and left its rating alone.

Setup & Price Structure

  • 52-week high $264.09, distance -29.7%. Three-month return +17.0%. RSI(14) 73.5.
  • The move is a single-session gap. The +23.7% on 2026-08-04 accounts for the bulk of the recovery leg; the structure since is a shelf that has not been retested. No company data is scheduled to defend it until roughly November.
  • Life-cycle: ACCELERATING. Dated by 2026-08-04 (the print and the 23.7% move) and 2026-08-05 (four price-target raises in one session). New attention and expanding participation are present. The qualifier: the participation arrived in one day, and the stock remains 29.7% below its 52-week high, so this is an early recovery off a broken multi-year structure rather than a trend extension.
  • Crowding and positioning observables (stated, not judged): RSI(14) 73.5 at 2026-08-07 is the most extended reading of the recovery; spot exceeds four of five targets published in the last 30 days; zero Buy ratings among those five; no company-scheduled catalyst inside the next 30 days. On the flow side the issuer is a buyer — 3.6M shares for $547M in Q2, $1.2B remaining, $500M added 2026-07-30 — the opposite of issuance into strength. No insider Form 4 disposals surfaced in the feeds reviewed between 2026-08-04 and 2026-08-09; treat that as unverified rather than a confirmed clean read, and check EDGAR directly.
  • A weekly close under it would mean the post-print shelf gave way with no fresh company data to explain it. Above, UBS's $196 is the only recent target sitting over spot and functions as the first published resistance reference.

Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)

  • 2026-08-09 → 2026-09-08: no company-scheduled event. This is the notable feature of the window. Q2 results (2026-08-04) and the Form 10-Q for the period ended 2026-06-30 are both filed. The gap has to hold on flow alone.
  • ~2026-10 (est.) — Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo, Orlando. The largest conference of the year and the next live read on the segment that grew 15.5% YoY in Q2.
  • ~2026-11-03 (est.) — Q3 2026 results. The only dated resolution of whether contract-value growth keeps improving off +1.7% YoY, and whether the buyback authorized on 2026-07-30 was deployed above the post-gap price.

What Would Change Our Mind

The thesis breaks on contract value before it breaks on EPS. If the Q3 print (~2026-11-03, est.) shows total CV growth back at or below the Q1 2026 rate — undoing the 70bp sequential improvement disclosed for 2026-06-30 — then the "trough is in" reading was wrong, and a beat driven by margin will not carry the multiple. A second fundamental break: FY26 revenue guidance cut again from ≥$6.38B at the Q3 print, which would degrade the quality of the August raise.

On price, a weekly close below $168 would mark the 2026-08-04 gap as failed, with no company disclosure in the interval to attribute it to. A quieter form of failure: the shares grind into UBS's $196 and stall there while no covering analyst moves to Buy — that would date the shift from ACCELERATING to SATURATED, since the marginal bid would have exhausted the published target range without new fundamental input.

A third condition worth watching is the buyback. The Q2 pace — 3.6M shares for $547M — was set during a quarter that traded beneath the current basis. Materially slower repurchase disclosed with Q3 would remove the mechanism the EPS story depends on.

Correlation Notes

  • Not an AI-infrastructure name, despite the ticker. IT trades with the AI-disruption-of-professional-services complex — Accenture, Forrester, staffing and consulting — and de-rates as a group when "AI eats knowledge work" headlines run. Cross-reads from semiconductor or datacenter capex names are close to irrelevant here.
  • Federal spending is a quantified, separable input. The spread between ex-federal CV growth (+3.3%) and total CV growth (+1.7%) at 2026-06-30 measures the government drag directly; US federal IT budget actions move that spread.
  • Conferences runs on a different cycle than the book. The $244M / +15.5% YoY segment tracks enterprise travel and event budgets and is seasonally back-loaded, so quarter-on-quarter segment comparisons are not clean.
  • Tape context for the gap: the 2026-08-04 print landed on a session in which the S&P 500 and Dow set records and Palantir rose 27%. A risk-on backdrop is a favourable environment for a gap to hold; a broad-market drawdown removes that support without changing anything about Gartner's disclosure.

Notes

  • Gartner pays no dividend; capital return is entirely share repurchase, so buyback pace is the cash-return signal each quarter.
  • Contract value is disclosed at period end both as-reported and FX-neutral; the two growth rates differ and are often cited interchangeably.
  • Conferences revenue is seasonally back-loaded around the October Symposium, so sequential segment comparisons are not directly meaningful.
  • The research segment is now reported as 'Insights'; earlier filings label the same business differently in historical comparisons.

Five straight up sessions took HPE to a $53.22 close on 2026-08-07 with the 2026-08-04 gap floor at $50.24 still untested; Trefis put the five-day move at +19.8% against +5.6% for the S&P 500, so this leg is no longer pure sector beta. Forward P/E 13.79 versus 49.66 trailing. The still-unconfirmed ~2026-09-02 Q3 print against the $11.5–12.1B / $0.88–0.93 guide is the binary.
